What Is Analysis Paralysis, How To Overcome It And Start Your Business Today

Analysis Paralysis is when you go so deep into learning and listening, that you get so involved in the learning part that you never get around to the doing part. It’s when you keep watching YouTube videos about how to do something, but then YOU don’t. Or you read other blog idea’s or spend 100 hours trying to come up with a niche, just to have no idea where to begin. It might sound something like this:

“Holy cow…. I have all of these great ideas and I know exactly what I want to do. I just need to learn this next thing…. and this other thing…. Oh yeah! I need to learn that too and then I’ll get started on it.”

But at some point along the line, your attention goes off in another direction and you really have no idea what you’re going to do at all. You’ve reached that paralysis point. So how do you overcome it, bite the bullet and let yourself go. We’re going to discuss some of the things I did that may be able to help you as well.

Ask Yourself What’s Stopping You

I watched all these amazing stories from these influencer videos where they talk about how they built a blog or a channel and they are doing all these amazing things. The bug bit me. I make good money at my job bringing in six figures, but the higher I go in my company, the more competition for that next level. Owning my own online business definitely has more potential if I do it right…but what do I do?

I looked into some different niche’s but was having such a hard time deciding on what I was going to do. I mean I’m passionate about so many different things… I knew I loved business though. Like in general. I love that in my line of work, my main responsibility is driving and increasing revenue to deliver a better bottom line. I loved coaching and teaching. But why wasn’t I getting started?

It turns out that not doing anything at all is our own self defense mechanism that tells us that if you don’t want to be disappointed, then just don’t do it. It’s easy to be scared to fail, especially when it’s publicly. If you look in the mirror and ask yourself that question “Why am I not doing this?”, then I bet you’ll come up with a similar answer that I did. Because I don’t want to fail, or I don’t want to do it wrong

Set Yourself Up With The Right Expectations

If you’re worried about failing, or your work not being accepted by your community, then you’re setting yourself up with that kind of result. Call it a self fulfilling prophecy if you will. So how do we go into our new business/blog/channel with the right mindset? Through setting the right expectations with ourselves.

Really though, if you look at the quote from Sean Cannell from Video Influencers, and you knew that your success was guaranteed, what would you do? I’d also like to hear your comments below.

Look… when you start your new venture, you’re going to have zero subscribers, zero followers, and most likely zero support. Friends and family won’t actually understand what you’re working towards, and most of them probably don’t share the same passions you do. You really are on your own here for a bit until you build a real organic following. And to be honest, that’s the tough part.

However, since very few people are going to read what you put out at first, that gives you the perfect opportunity to build your skills in what it is you decide to do. You don’t have to be master when you start, but you do have to start to become a master at it.

Let Disappointment Be Your Fuel

Remember those expectations we talked about above? Well keep those in your mind. The first bit of content that you’re going to produce is not going to get you the type of results that you feel it should. It’s natural. But it’s also natural to feel that sense of disappointment when you put together what you feel is an amazing post or a quality video, only to see it go largely unnoticed.

However, if you keep in your mind that if you can be CONSISTENT, that over time you’ll gain one more view, one more comment, one more like and then one more follow, then that disappointment starts to subside. You learn the value of a loyal follower, whether that be on social media, YouTube, or your blog. If you go in with the mindset that you’re looking to capture just 1 more set of eyes and not 10,000, then you can appreciate the progress you’ve made.

But you must be consistent. I mean think about it, how can you hope for a loyal readership if you can’t be loyal back with new content? How can you expect growth in your space, when you’re not willing to put in focus on your own growth?

Figure Out That One Thing You Can Do Right Now and Start.

Listen, if we all waited until we knew everything we needed to know before we started doing something, no one would do anything….ever. At the end of the day we all learn most by doing.

Give yourself that opportunity to begin SOMETHING even if you’re not 100% sure what that something is yet. If you’re like me, then there’s a burning passion inside of you that knows if you just had the chance, you could be great. However there’s only one person on this planet that is going to give you that chance. And that’s YOU.

So let’s figure out what you can do TODAY. Not tomorrow, not the next day. What can you start today? Your website maybe? Build a new Instagram? Create a Facebook Group? Record a video? All of those take but just a moment to start. Of course it will take time to master. But all you need to do today is Start. Just start.

If you want to start your website, then start right here. Now yes this is an affiliate link, but we’ve got a bundle for you at only $3 month that gets you your domain, your email and website builder. You don’t have to use hostgator, but you can poke around and see what they offer or you can use someone and just start. If you’re not ready for the website, that’s fine. But start yourself something today. Did you count how many times I just said “Start”. Yeah… it’s for a reason! START!

  1. It can be so hard sometimes to take the leap. My husband and I did it a few years ago when he quit his full-time job to work for ourselves. It’s been challenging, but we did it. He does graphics design and works on a lot of board games. We have a few friends who almost have analysis paralysis when it comes to playing games, even when they are designers themselves!

  2. My husband analyzes everything so it can definitely be hard to overcome for myself. I am definitely working towards some goals that require me to just work and not look at everything surrounding me. It can definitely be hard!

  3. This is so me. I’m always the looker and not the doer. I need to start doing what I’m interested in or else my looking will really be for nothing. Great advice!

  5. What an inspiring, motivational post! It can be SO hard to get “unstuck,” but you are right – often the fear of failure is what holds us back from even trying in the first place. If we can just move beyond that, life is an open field of possibilities!
